Welcome to the Wheelers and Dealers Square Dance Club's Web-Page.
On this page you will find a brief history of our club and a full list of our dance activities during 2010.
Wheelers and Dealers are a Mainstream club and we meet on Tuesdays from 8.00 to 10.15 p.m. every Tuesday
(except Xmas and New Year) at Wendover Memorial Hall.
Square Dancers world-wide are welcome to join us.
A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE CLUB
WHEN WERE WE FORMED?
Wheelers and Dealers Square Dance Club were founded on Monday 20th September 1982 by Alan Covacic and his wife.
Our first venue was the Archery Unit at the Stoke Mandeville Hospital Spinal Unit. In those days club nights consisted
of student classes for an enthusiatic group of new dancers combined with occasional tips for "wheelechair" patients from
the hospital who were invited to join us each week.
From time to time even some of the bed-ridden patients were wheeled from their wards to the Archery Unit to provide
them with an evenings entertainment as well.
WHY ARE WE CALLED WHEELERS AND DEALERS?
The name was chosen because of the active involvement of the club with the Spinal Unit of Stoke Mandeville Hospital
and the patients who were often in wheelchairs. Wheelers and Dealers is of course a play on words with the square
dance move "Wheel and Deal". When the club became members of the BAASDC we added "of Stoke Mandeville" to our
name to avoid confusion with another club - Wheel and Deal S.D.C. Although our official name (and our badge) still
includes "of Stoke Mandeville" we are now well known in our own right and this part is usually omitted.
HOW WAS OUR BADGE DESIGNED?
The badge was specifically designed to reflect the involvement of the club with the Hospital:-
- The wheel represents the Spinal Unit (a wheelchair)
- The playing cards are a representation of the "helping hand" of the square dancers (for poker players - a "Royal Flush")
- The handshake indicates the close relationship between them
Although the club has no direct links with the Hospital any more, the badge serves to remind members of how
and why the club was first founded.
CLUB AFFILIATIONS
Wheelers and Dealers Square Dance Club are members of the British Association of American Square Dance Clubs
(BAASDC), founded in 1953. Our Club Caller is a member of the Square Dance Callers Club of Great Britain. He
has been a Council Member, Magazine Editor, P.R.O., Vice-President and President of the SDCCGB and is currently
Chairman of the London & Home Counties Regional Callers Assembly (L&HCRCA).
WHEN AND WHERE DO WE DANCE?
Wheelers and Dealers Square Dance Club meet every Tuesday from 8.00 p.m. at the Wendover Memorial Hall,
Wharf Road, Wendover, Bucks HP22 6HQ. We have danced at the Memorial Hall since 1986. Other venues for
the club have been Stoke Mandeville Hospital, Aylesbury; Our Lady of Lourdes Church Hall, Bedgrove,
Aylesbury; Stoke Mandeville County Combined School; The Anthony Hall, Aston Clinton and St Annes Church
Hall, Wendover. Open Dances were originally held in the Sir Henry Floyd School and then at the Mandeville
Secondary School, both in Aylesbury. Later on we used the John Colet School that is adjacent to our club hall
in Wendover - nowadays open dances are held at our club hall, Wendover Memorial Hall.
PAST EVENTS AT WHEELERS AND DEALERS
In 1984 and 1988 Wheelers and Dealers Square Dance Club hosted Charity Marathon square dances (24 hours
and 26 hours respectively) in aid of the BBC TV Children in Need Appeal. In the process members raised over
7000 pounds for the charity. These particular events also earned our Caller entries in the Guinness Book of World
Records for several years. One of the most challenging activities was the entry of a float in the Aylesbury Carnival
of 1984. The Carnival theme was "the next 100 years" and so the club decorated, and danced on, a huge articulated
lorry to represent square dancing in 1985 and 2005. Dancers representing 1985 were dressed in conventional square
dance attire and danced to a live caller (Alan Covacic). The dancers who represented 2005 were dresses as robots and
danced to a huge "computer". (Maybe a little too close to thje truth for comfort?). In 1983 our members assisted with
the transfer of patients and equipment to the new Spinal Unit at Stoke Mandeville Hospital. In 1986 several club
members attended the European Square Dance Convention in Canterbury. In 1990 a coach-full of members and friends
from other clubs travelled to Cologne in Germany and danced at a Square Dance Jamboree there. In 1994 11 members
travelled with the Club Caller by mini-bus for a square dance week-end with the Kilt Kickers Square Dance Club in
Aberdeen.
In 2002, the club decided to take a break from regular weekly meetings - numbers were very low, no new dancers were
recruited and the club appeared to be stagnating. However, the decision was made to continue as a square dance club
and to host monthly "Sunday Tea Dances" instead of the weekly meetings. This continued for just over 3 years when
weekly Tuesday meetings were re-instated. Now we had some new dancers and things started to improve. The Tea
Dances continued as well and the club began thriving. In 2007 the club celebrated it's 25th Birthday with a European
styled Square Dance Event - 2.00 'til 11.30 with a buffet dinner after the dance. This proved to be a massive success
(and will be repeated in 2010 for our 28th Birthday!!!)
We hope that you have enjoyed this brief summary of our club
and would be delighted to welcome you and all square dancers
at a Club Night or an Open Dance.
